महावीर सिंह फोगाट पहले एक पहलवान रहता है, लेकिन अच्छी नौकरी के लिए कुश्ती छोड़ दिया रहता है। इस कारण भारत के लिए स्वर्ण पदक जीतने का उसका सपना भी अधूरा रह जाता है। इसके बाद वह सोचता है कि उसका अधूरा सपना उसका बेटा पूरा करेगा। लेकिन उसके घर लगातार चार बेटियों के होने से वह निराश हो जाता है। क्योंकि उसे लगता है कि लड़कियों को कुश्ती नहीं बल्कि घर के कार्यों को सीखना चाहिए। लेकिन जब उसकी बड़ी बेटियाँ, गीता फोगाट और बबीता फोगाट मिल कर उन पर अपमानजनक टिप्पणी करने वाले लड़कों को पीट कर आ जाते हैं तो उसे उनमें भविष्य का पहलवान दिखाई देता है।

महावीर उन दोनों को कुश्ती सिखाने लगता है। उसके द्वारा कठोर तरीकों से सीखना, बाल छोटे-छोटे कटवाना, सुबह सुबह कसरत करना आदि से शुरू में उन लड़कियों को अपने पिता के ऊपर बहुत क्रोध आते रहता है, पर जल्द ही उन्हें यह एहसास हो जाता है कि उनके पिता उन्हें केवल गृहणियों के रूप में जीवन बिताने के लिए नहीं बल्कि देश के लिए कुछ कर दिखाने के लिए यह सब कर रहे हैं। इसके बाद वो दोनों खुशी से महावीर से कुश्ती के दांव-पेंच सीखते हैं। महावीर उनको प्रतियोगिता में भी ले जाता है, जिसमें गीता और बबीता मिल कर कई लड़कों को हरा देते हैं। प्रतियोगिताओं को जीतते हुए गीता को पटियाला में प्रशिक्षण लेने का मौका मिलता है। जिसके बाद वह कॉमनवैल्थ खेलों में हिस्सा ले सकेगी।

गीता उस संस्थान में जाने के बाद अपने दोस्तों के साथ मिल कर अनुशासन की उपेक्षा करने लगती है। वह हर समय टीवी देखती, सड़क पर मिलने वाले खाने खाती और लंबे बाल रखती थी। उस संस्थान के शिक्षक का तकनीक उसके पिता के तकनीक से थोड़ा अलग था, और गीता को लगता था कि उसके शिक्षक का तकनीक उसके पिता के तकनीक से बहुत अच्छा है जबकि उसके पिता की तकनीक पुरानी हो चुकी है। वह घर लौट आती है तो वह उसके पिता के सिखाये तकनीक के स्थान पर संस्थान में सिखाये तकनीक से मुक्केबाज़ी करती है। इसके बाद महावीर और गीता में मुक्केबाजी होती है और अपने बढ़ती उम्र के कारण महावीर उससे हार जाता है। बबीता अपने बहन गीता से कहती है कि वह अभी जिस स्थान पर है, वह उसके पिता के तकनीक के कारण है और उसे अपने पिता के तकनीक को नहीं भूलना चाहिए।

गीता की तरह बबीता भी उस संस्थान में चले जाती है। गीता लगातार हर मैच हारते रहती है, क्योंकि वह अपने पिता द्वारा सिखाये गए तकनीक या कुश्ती में पूरी तरह ध्यान नहीं देते रहती है। उसने अपने नाखून बढ़ा लिए रहते हैं और रंग भी लगा रखा होता है साथ में अपने बालों को भी काफी लंबा रखें होने कारण भी उसे हार का सामना करना पड़ते रहता है। उसे अपनी गलती का एहसास हो जाता है और वह इस बात को महावीर को बताती है। महावीर उसके संस्थान में आ कर उन दोनों को प्रशिक्षण देने लगता है। लेकिन उस संस्थान में प्रशिक्षण सिखाने वाले को जब इस बात का पता चलता है तो वह उन दोनों को बाहर निकालने हेतु शिकायत कर देता है। उसके बाद यह निर्णय हुआ कि उन दोनों को संस्थान में तभी रखा जा सकता है जब महावीर संस्थान में न आए और उन दोनों को कहीं कोई प्रशिक्षण न दे। इसके बाद महावीर गीता के पुराने वीडियो को देखता है जिसमें वह हार जाये रहती है और फोन के द्वारा गीता को उसके गलती के बारे में बताता है।

कॉमनवैल्थ खेलों में गीता हिस्सा ले लेती है और महावीर उसके कोच के निर्देशों के विपरीत दर्शकों के साथ बैठ जाता है। गीता अपने कोच के सिखाए तरीकों से न लड़ कर अपने पिता के सिखाये तरीकों से लड़ती है और हर बार जीत जाती है। उस कोच को महावीर से जलन होने लगती है और इस कारण वह महावीर को एक कमरे में बंद कर देता है। महावीर के अनुपस्थिति में भी गीता स्वर्ण पदक जीत जाती है और भारत की पहली महिला पहलवान बन जाती है, जिसने स्वर्ण पदक जीता।

सही समय पर महावीर वहाँ से निकल आता है और समाचार मीडिया के सामने वह कोच अपना श्रेय नहीं ले पाता है। इसके बाद फिल्म के अंत होने से थोड़ा पहले दिखाया जाता है कि बबीता भी कॉमनवैल्थ खेल 2014 में स्वर्ण पदक जीत जाती है और गीता पहली महिला पहलवान बनती है जो ओलिंपिक्स में हिस्सा लेती है।
